Yet another storm

The media might have spiced it up a little, but shouldn't a storm that threatens to flood even a small part of European coastal areas together with expectations of sea level rises in the future due to climate change make people realise that things are getting serious?

København

25 days ago we left our island and headed for Copenhagen.
I had been counting down for such a long time!
3 days wandering around in this beautiful city really was the perfect start to our trip.

We were armed with a little list of great spots and recommendations but somehow managed quite well to discover little gems on our own :)
Kafferiet was perfect for our first coffee in Denmark, hiding from the rain after having photographed the little mermaid together with a busload of Japanese tourists :p

For those of you planning a citytrip:
Café Lyst serves a smashing breakfast,
The Royal Smushi Café is a great spot for hungry shoppers,
and vegetarians and vegans will definitely enjoy Café N!

But don't plan too much!
There's something magical about getting a little lost and finding
the best imaginable place for a late-afternoon Irish coffee.
(in our case Tjili pop)

Tip (added by my sensible boyfriend ;)) - find accommodation with free parking or park your car outside of town!

Sugar kick at work

What follows is possibly a health hazard,
(and very irresponsible for a nutritionist to recommend)
but since we'll run out of chocolate by 2020 it'll only be an issue for the next 7 years.
Dangerous little things!
(actually better cold than hot so be patient and let them cool on the tray. I promise, it's worth it)

Saving some to take to work ( in our case with a bottle of fresh apple juice) is also worth it,
a perfect pick-me-up after some vigorous gardening!

Going South

Soon we're following the birds down south to escape the cold (a little bit anyway) but this weekend we enjoyed an exceptionally beautiful autumn day by the sea discussing our first project for next spring - renovating a typical Gotlandic fishing house.

A fine day in the forest

Second mushroom hunt of the season ...
turned out to be just as unsuccessful as the first,
but instead of sulking over the absence of the only 2 kinds we know are edible we enjoyed the walk in the crisp autumn air, filled our basket with potential dinner items, downloaded an app and went home with the intention to study every single one of them.

So far we ate 3 and are still alive and well :)

Sweetest Surprise

Some people know I'm attracted to all things sunflower-yellow,
some know I have a thing for notebooks ...
some people know I love taking pictures,
looking at pictures,
and remembering beautiful days and re-living sweet memories with pictures.

And there's one special person out there
who put all of those things together
in a little box
and sent it all the way to Sweden!

Apples, figs, and other rewards

I dread the day we'll have to say goodbye to our little house and move back to an apartment without garden ...
Anyone who has the space should try growing their own food - it's so much fun & so rewarding,
plus I have a theory that people who grow their own veggies actually also eat more healthy too.
(at least I like to believe that :))

This summer, I've been self-sufficient in home-grown cucumber, parsley, basil & cherry tomatoes
as well as figs and grapes, and since I've gone completely overboard on pumpkin we won't be eating much else this fall :p (today was pumpkin-pie day!)

We thought the fig season was over actually, but after a couple of sunny days we were rewarded with a surprise harvest :D

Oh and have I ever said how lucky I feel to have access to so many apple trees as a gardener?
My juicer gets to work hard these days - and lemoncurd lovers should try applecurd! It's a whole new level of awesomeness!

Newsflash: Climate change is manmade.

No shit Sherlock!
Does it frighten anyone else that it took "science" such a long time to agree on this?

Autumn Cosiness

It's been a very long and fabulous summer
but it has come to an end ...

It's time to harvest everything that is left to harvest,
store garden furniture,
 rake leaves,
pick apples,
put on some woolly socks and a big sweater
and drink hot chocolate with mini-marshmallows ...

Happiness is ...

coming home from work, finding the man of my dreams in my kitchen,
and as if that wasn't enough,
getting a spoonful of delicious homemade fig-jam (with ginger, cinnamon & honey)
and a reason to take out my camera! :D

Mmmmm!

Peace

One very early morning on the island of Fårö
while I was still cuddled up in my sleeping bag
someone got inspired, crawled out of the tent with my camera and took this stunning picture.

The calm and peacefulness of this image is almost overwhelming.

All credits to you Jonatan :)
I might have to print this one and hang it on a wall somewhere.

Bowls full of goodness :)

Company when out picking berries and plums makes it all the more fun,
and breakfast for two is definitely better than breakfast for one.
Should anyone be interested in the most delicious mango coconut rice pudding,
you can find the recipe here :)

Favourites

Meet Silas
A fascinating cat with funny ways and intriguing habits,
a skillful hunter who tried to charm his way into my heart by bringing me fresh mice several nights in a row,
only to realize that simply chilling with me on the couch and joining me for walks in the garden did the trick :)

Tonight is his last night here before he's going back home to his favourite humans after his 2 months holiday with me.

Tonight's also my last night here before my favourite human comes and moves in with me :)
(that might be why I'm still up at 3:45 :p)
Now that our slight (long distance) bump in the road is nicely straightened out it's time for new adventures!

And what better place to start than right here, where it all started?

The best thing one can do when it's raining is to let it rain

My body has been giving me gentle nudges for weeks
and now even the weather makes me stay inside and take it easy!

I finally found time to make those pom-poms I have been wanting to make since May
and I have enough redcurrant jelly to feed a whole village!

The cat (who also doesn't want to go outside) is enjoying some sofa-company
and I might just finish yet another book :)

Your heart already knows where your feet should go

Picking red currants used to remind me of summers in Sweden
last summer that memory changed to breakfasts with my dear friend Fien
Now it reminds me of picnics in the garden with the man I love ...

a very special someone who got up in the middle of the night and drove about 400 km
to catch a flight to come and surprise me on my birthday (!!!)

:D

Halfway ...

Time flies when you're having fun!
Especially when building sandcastles, trying out new restaurants & beating competitive people at minigolf ;)

It's a real shame Swedish summers are so short ...
In about a month's time the tourists will have left again and the island will return to its usual quiet self.
It's definitely time for a big adventure this fall!

Summer!

 Summer is here!
The sun is shining,
the tourists have started to invade our little island
and this afternoon I'm welcoming my first guests at Muramaris!

This is the very first summer I'll be spending entirely on Gotland.
Anything else would just be wrong :)

I turn it off!

FINALLY an infographic and campaign about the enormously wasteful habit of leaving your engine running while you're not actually driving.
Something that has pissed me off for as long as I can remember will maybe finally die off and disappear!
Visit www.iturnitoff.com for a bigger version of the image above and TURN IT OFF!

Midsommar på Ekobyn

Sunshine & strawberries
Silly dances around the midsummer pole
Volleyball & disco in the meadow ...

The most perfect party that ended around the most perfect campfire.

Oh Sweden I love you so :)

Hello Health!

This is not a commercial - I (unfortunately) am not paid to write this blogpost -
but this beast of a machine has been on my wish list for quite a while ...
and now she's mine!
Meet Judy the juicer & the first drinks she produced :)

Since the day was started on such a healthy note,
we just continued with a kick-ass salad (partly home-grown) ...

... and finished with a disney movie & a healthy amount of chocolate :D

A Warm House

No house is complete without
1. yellow accents
2. my pet stag Hugo
3. a space for long and elaborate breakfasts
4. a proper housewarming with good food and ever better people!

I've left my little student room for the summer and will be spending the next 2 months here.
Check out my facebook page "Sommarboende på Muramaris" if you're interested in your own little cottage in my summer paradise.

Friends & family - this is your chance! Come visit Gotland!
I actually have a guest room these days! :D
